Managed to snap this road-sign during an extremely short visit to Labis, Johor a couple of hours ago. A by-election is less than two weeks away in this neighbourhood and the situation appears to be Tenang (calm) in Labis.

In politics, 'calm' could mean different things at different places but here in Johor (Umno's birthplace) it could be a "hurricane" for the uninitiated.

The signs are good in Tenang ... bright and clear.

I seriously hope that the powers that be (the people earning the fat salary in Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur) could consider doing some serious service to the taxpayers by either enhancing their surveillance or doing regular cleaning up of roadsigns and signboards in our Kuala Lumpur.

I'm sure a similar menace (mainly the work of illegal money lenders or Alongs) is a bane for many a local authority throughout the country but what are we or rather those in charge doing to overcome such eyesores?

Are you guys waiting for a bloody Cabinet Directive ? If you have a problem enforcing the law or if there is no legislation to prevent such dirt for our eyes please shout it out so something could be done. We don't deserve such roadsigns!

On the other hand, if you are just damn bloody lazy (in this case DBKL) to do anything then don't bother us with your taxes and all kinds of other charges, including that for parking.

The above Sickening road sign is in the heart of Bangsar and ... ooooh ya, its supposed to read "Persiaran Ara Kiri".

p/s I wonder what is the fate of signboards in other parts of KL if such is the situation in an upmarket area like Bangsar.

The credibility of the highest court in this country of ours is being put in jeopardy over a politicised religious issue, which actually falls within the absolute jurisdiction of Duli Yang Maha Mulia Yang DiPertuan Agong and the Majlis Raja-Raja (Malay Rulers Conference).

Whatever the verdict of any court may be, the on-going serious confusion over the use of the word “Allah’ by non-Muslims would not come to an end.

In fact the verdicts would continue to be hot topics in political ceramahs and the judiciary would once again end up being the victim of this peculiar political expediency.

The greater motivation behind this issue appears to be politics and the proponents are stoking the fire with shallow but emotive arguments.

One among which is that the Muslims in this country are ‘mature’ enough to give up their rights over the use of the term “Allah’.

Another idiotic allegation is that the government was bent on depriving the Christians in Sarawak and Sabah from continuing with their religious norms that has been in practice since before the formation of this country.

Both the above are mere fallacy if we truly understand the under-lying reasons, justifications and the glaring difference in our society.

Ethnic composition, beliefs, societal norms and historical background also separates “Tanah Melayu” (Malay Peninsula) from our Borneo brothers.

The use of the word ‘Allah’ by non-Muslims, particularly in prints and propagation materials, is totally unacceptable for ordinary Muslims in this country.

Muslims, with extra emphasis on those in the Peninsula, cannot accept this latest attempt to rob their rights in order to satisfy the political lust of certain quarters.

Why demand for a term that has never been used or practiced by Christians in the Peninsula since time in memorial?

Why now, and why drag our fellow Christians brothers from Sarawak and Sabah into a shrewd political plot engineered in the Peninsula?

It ought to be drawn to attention that Pas, the Islamic party that has now abandoned its struggles towards installing an Islamic nation after its association with Parti Keadilan and DAP, has made it very clear that the current dilemma faced by Muslims in Malaysia is a political issue and not one that strikes the very heart of Islam itself.

It was the Pas’ political bureau that took a lengthy three hours to deliberate the issue and issued a ‘decree’ in support of High Court judge Datuk Lau Bee Lan’s judgment.

On Dec 31, Bee Lan ruled that the word ‘Allah’ was not exclusive to Islam and that decision is now before the Court of Appeal after the Home Ministry filed a notice of appeal on Jan 4.

Pas’ Dewan Ulama and its illustrious religious scholars who often condemn others as infidels and ‘celaka’ was sidelined and were merely asked to state their views, as political expediency superseded Islam in Pas.

But Pas leaders are so divided over a host of differences now and that this latest attack on their faith has not reached their souls.

Fresh evidence in the form of video recordings have since surfaced to prove that certain Opposition politicians have been stirring up this sensitive religious issue long before the last day of 2009.

This, for me, appears like a premeditated political strategy to drive a wedge between the government, Muslims and non-Muslims in the country.

What better way could there be than to create ciaos and destabilise the government, as attempted in 1998, to grab the Prime Minister’s seat?

The sudden resignation of PKR secretary general Datuk Sallehuddin Hashim should open the eyes of many who have this blind faith, not in Islam but in a desperate and dangerous leader who would not stop at anything.

The anger and resentment surrounding this contentious issue could only be possibly put to rest with the immediate intervention of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong and the Majlis Raja-Raja.

Malaysians in general, irrespective of race or religion want a quick end to this on-going religious crisis, a veiled threat to this nation.

An emergency session of the Majlis Raja-Raja (Ruler Conference) would be the most appropriate platform to solve this crisis.

Ampun Tuanku!

Only Your Highness’ intervention could stop this abuse of Islam for the sake of politics.

Couldn't really understand the rationale of the sign which says 'Stand Up and Wash Your Hands'. Even the owner of the beach front eatery at 8th Mile Teluk Kemang in Port Dickson couldn't explain it. Guess some customers might have squatted at the wash basin to wash their ... hands!

The Lay Pak Kopitiam is not a Chinese coffeeshop or named after a Chinese person.

I believe the name is derived from the Malay word 'Lepak'.

And people nowadays love to 'lepak' at such cofeeshops or should I call

cafes. Thus the cafe is aptly named.

When I first came across this sign in Long Lamai (an established Penan village in Ulu Baram, Sarawak) I thought it was Good Dawai, Bye Lakau but my good friend Ezra Uda (Sarawak’s first Penan graduate) corrected me with a wide smile.
The proud son of Long Lamai said “That is DAWAI LAKAU brother… goodbye in English”.

If you’re searching for Long Lamai on the Sarawak map look for it near Long Banga, close to the Kalimantan border. Dawai Lakau!
